From the previous post, “How to build an opt-in list I“, we talked about the mistakes to avoid when building a list. As said before, maintaining a list is the harder part compared to building a list. List building involves relationship building.
Doing it the right way requires some skills and effort. Before you start out to build a list, think of what you want to get out of it. It could be just to build your brandname, to offer freebies, or to make a profit out of your list. Whatever it is, you must put across the right message in your first introductory message after the the opt-in confirmation. You do not want your subscribers to have the wrong idea of what they can get out of you. If they get the wrong message, they will opt out or simply become unresponsive.
Building a list should be a win-win situation for you and your subscribers. It’s simply can’t be a one sided affair where you win all the time. Go join a list to learn how people build and maintain their list. A mixture of freebies and product recommendations is a good strategy. Be sure to guage for yourself through some split testing to see which combination your list respond best to.
You got to decide on the mailing schedule so that your subscribers become accustomed to and know when they can expect a mail for you. If you are planning a weekly newsletter, be sure to stick to the schedule and not carrying it through half heartedly.
After establishing a good relationship, you can go ahead to recommend useful product to help your subscribers. Even better, you can do a survey to gather your next product creation ideas.
For those who are starting out to build a list, you should plan your own roadmap before rushing into it. A well planned list building strategy is already half a battle won.
Wish you good luck!
