Have you started to use Akismet to reduce spam on your blog?

Are you being spammed everyday?

i guess this is a big problem that plagued many of us. Fortunately, there is Akismet to the rescue.

I like to share some of my experience with regard to spam in this post. A few months ago, when we first started our evosuccess blog, it was all peace and quiet. Quiet mean zero traffic. When we started to get some traffic through social networking, spam started to come along. At that time, I didn’t bother much since there are only a few spam comments everyday.

As our traffic grew, spam grew as well. From a few spams everyday, it ballooned to an average of 100 spams daily. Seems that everything got out of control. With more than 100 spams received daily, it became a very tedious task to moderate genuine comments on our posts. My apologies to those whose comments may have got deleted together with the spam.

Until one day, I decided to solve the problem once and for all. I began to surf around for a good spam control plugin for wordpress. Little did I know that Akismet is already bundled with the Wordpress installation.

Yes, Akismet is disabled by default. If you are being spammed to a level until it disturbs you and makes you wonder how the spammer got hold of your blog address, Akismet is here to stop them all. Remember to get the latest version to ensure maximum protection.

To activate Akismet, you have to get a free API key from Wordpress. If you are earning more than a certain amount of money with your blog (I have forgotten how much is it), you have to get a corporate API key. Though nobody will know how much you earn unless you disclose your income. Just sign up for a free one by registering a account without the creation of a new blog.

After getting the key, enable the Akismet plugin and go to Akismet configuration under plugins to enter the Wordpress API key.

That’s all and peace will prevail again. Akismet will capture all the spams and delete them automatically after 15 days. Just remember to make sure that genuine comments are not treated as spam.
