In order to have a business online, it is unavoidable to have a website. But having a website is not good enough. You will need visitors to your website. Otherwise, it is as good as having none.

1. Build your website such that it is able to download fast.

On the internet, the attention of your visitors is only about 30 sec. You wouldnt want to let your visitors to wait too long for your website to load. Else, they will be probably jumped to other websites to find their information.

2. Get listed on search engines.

If possible, try to get listed on popular search engines, like Yahoo! and Google. Otherwise, start with smaller ones, like Ask.com (formerly Ask Jeeves). Sometimes, it can be difficult to get listed on major search engines (unless you pay), but you can start small.

3. Optimise to get indexed.

Since most people use the search engines to find information, maximize your position by making your content keyword-rich, so that your website will get indexed.

4. Know thy viewers.

Do I have to say more? Understand who are your markets and make sure your website satisfy their needs.

5. Content is king.

Besides knowing your viewers/customers, you will need to have good quality and valuable content, so that it will enable you to sell your products better. Also, have a compelling copy which transports the message that you desire to impart to your readers. It should direct your visitors throughout the course of the sales. Check and double check always your grammar and spelling.

6. Focus your website.

Make sure your website send a clear message to your viewers. Be it selling a service or product. Be sure that your viewers get your objectives of the website straight away.

7. Easy to navigate website.

Make your website user-friendly and easy to navigate. It should be as intuitive as possible.

8. Credibility is important.

Indicate a clear “privacy statement”. Provide also noticeable link unto your “privacy statement” on every page where you are requesting for personal data from your visitors. Similarly, make available your valid contact information.

9. Accept credit card payments.

It is so common to use credit card so make sure your business do accept credit card payments. Also, try to setup an account with Paypal, Stormpay or Clickbank.
